Is your correspondent from a foreign country? In scandinavia, it is short
for Svar == answer.

I noticed something odd in Outlook related to this. People responding to
email from a German Outlook (or OE I guess) have "AW:" prefixed to
subjects (the English Outlook uses "RE:" instead of "Re:", BTW). Now the
odd thing is that If I respond back, the "AW:" is replaced by a "RE:".
Seems to do it with any "??:" if an e-mail is a reply (not that it lets
me look at all the headers to check).

I have never met a version of "outlook" or "outlook express" that did
not let
you view all the headers. (outlook ...obviously... on an individual
email
window view|options menu option)

Tsk ... silly me. Obvious!

It seems to be using Thread-Topic and Thread-Index rather than Reference
or In-Reply-To headers it seems.

Though it still capitalises the prefix, which is ugly.

Its the equivalent of Re: from certain email setups. A friend in Sweden
usually ends up with this on his mails, I think I've seen it from Norway
as well

It generally means the sender is using a broken mailer.
