Hello folks,

it's getting jolly quiet around here, not like the good old days when I
was introduced to cam.misc back in 1993. Oh well...

Anyway, a year or so ago I posted about web hosting and someone
recommended mythic-beasts.com.

This morning I discovered that 123-reg have completely shafted me and
obliterated two email accounts because of their system migration and the
decision not to allow email forwarders on domains that don't have an
active mailbox of any sort. They basically eliminated my wife's email
address and my jazz orchestra email address, for which I would have to
start paying £25 (each) per year after the end of the grace period
(which ends I-don't-know-when). However, the forwarders have already
gone as part of the migration and I was suddenly not receiving any emails.

Anyway, I set up a mythic-beasts account and paid for a hosting package
this morning for my jazz orchestra (hhjazz.co.uk, to which
harmonyinharlem.co.uk will later be mapped) and it was live an hour or
so later, ready for me to upload the entire website.

All the transfering and setting-up was a click away - a far cry from
123-reg's awfully complicated, multi-layered twaddle which was getting
completely unfathomable especially with the legacy systems from
Supanames and also the intermediate mess during the migration.

Bloody awful. Stay away from 123-reg.

I wonder how many of the old gang still live in Cambridge. That might be a
problem...

That was the experience of somebody else on uk.* Usenet who migrated from
123-reg. I think there might be a reason:

I still live within the requisite 10 miles from Gt St Mary’s, as I have
since 1979 (apart from three years in SoCal).

I'm a lot further than that. Is this CAMBRIDGE misc, or CAMBRIDGESHIRE?
Because I'm inside the county.

It's never been a group with a compulsory residence requirement, just a
curiosity (or even an up to date working knowledge, so as to be able to
answer) regarding issues in Cambridge.

I thought I was a bit of new oik back in 1993, as if cam.misc had been
around for decades.

Interesting. I didn't know that beforehand.

I've had several very timely responses to emails today when I hurried to
set up the hosting when I discovered 123-reg had shafted me.

I'm loathe to email again tonight as I don't know if I'm just suffering
from some sort of DNS caching issue: my harmonyinharlem.co.uk domain did
for a while appear to be successfully moved to mythic-beasts but it
seems to have bounced back to the hosting package on 123-reg at the
moment (I've put slightly different text so I can see which one is loading).

Also, emails are still not working and the mythic-beast website claims
the MX records still haven't updated possible owing to caching issues. A
bit frustrating.

They are fine as domain reg only.

I can't delete my 123-reg account. The instructions for doing this don't
match what appears on my screen. You couldn't make this up.
