fishmongers in Cambridge?

Am I missing something obvious, or are there actually no fishmongers in
Cambridge? Or even in Cambridgeshire? Yellow pages etc suggests that the
nearest ones are Suffolk/Norfolk...

I know that the supermarkets (Tesco, Sainsburys, Waitrose) have wet fish
counters -- not brilliant but better than nothing. I also thought there
was a fish stall on the market, but it wasn't there on Friday (of all
days!) -- is there still such a thing? If so, which days is it there?

Any other suggestions for where to get decent fresh fish in Cambridge?

Unfortunately that is the case in terms of shops.

There is a fish stall on the market, certainly on Saturdays and I think
most of the week. Generally pretty good though perhaps a little pricey.

I believe that the Loch Fyne Restuarant also have a wet fish counter
which sells some stuff but I've never tried it so don't know what the
quality or range is like.

We tend to go for intermittent deliveries from the Fish Society
(http://www.thefishsociety.co.uk) which whilst frozen is generally very
good quality.

There used to be a mobile fish van that parked in Newnham Croft once a
week. I don't know if it still does.

When I last went to the butchers at Histon they were opening up a new
fish counter - I am assuming this is finished and up and running by now
as it was a good few months ago I was there

They do still sell fish, but they don't keep much (if anything) in stock -
you have to place an order with them and they get it in for you. Haven't
tried it myself as we tend to get ours from the man on the market.

One of the only good things about working in London was the nearby
Leadenhall Market with its amazing fish shop. Apparently, my grandfather
used to buy his fish there as well.

I used to call in most Friday mornings before work to get a good choice and
then have to take stick from the rest of the office for storing my goodies
in the office fridge. I also used to have an arrangement with my boss to
send me an e-mail titled "FISH!!!" late on Friday as a couple of times I'd
dash off home and forget about it.

There is one that comes on Wednesdays to the bottom end of Milton Road,
right next to the pub, just off Mitchams Corner.

Have you tried Morrisons at Cambourne, I haven't myself, but from looking at
fish in other morrisons, it tends to look better than any other supermarket
locally.

Seoul Plaza on Mill Road has a good selection of frozen fish and seafood.

There is one which visits our bit of Cambridge on occasions, so probably. I
don't how you might track him down though, we don't use him ourselves. IIRC
the van is more or less unmarked.

The Portland Arms (Mitchum's corner) has a fishmonger (not sure if it is
shellfish only) who turns up with a van a couple of times a week. Not
being a fish-eater, I haven't taken much notice. I'm sure others can offer
further details (or the pub itself).

There was a fish van that stopped by the Portland Arms around lunchtime
on Wednesdays. I haven't been in that area at the right time in the last
few months so can't confirm that it persists.

There's a lady who has a fish stall in St.Ives in Market Square
certainly every farmers' market but I'm fairly sure that she is
there every Saturday morning. IIRC, she visits Huntingdon
market too.

There used to be a wet fish shop behind the Trinity Foot off the
A14 at the Swavesey (Boxworth, Elsworth, "Cambridge Services")
junction. I'm not sure if it's still open since the TF changed hands
a few months ago.

Within the next week or so River Farm Smokery (A1303, Bottisham *) will
begin to start selling fresh fish in our food store. To begin with we
are planning a relatively limited range (trout, cod, mackerel, salmon,
sea bass, etc.) but, as business grows, we hope to expand our range.

All of our fish will be good quality, fresh, and where possible,
sustainably caught.

Out of interest, what types of fish do you generally buy?

How do you benchmark that? My impression is that cod is over-fished. How
do you guarantee to get yours from areas that aren't?

That fish is "farmed" not "caught".

Cod is horribly overfished. We are probably going to get farmed cod.
This is dependent on the price and the customers' willingness to pay for
farmed cod.

Failing that, the Icelandic cod population is generally thought to be
sustainably fished.

The Marine Conservation Society have a 'Good Fish Guide' which helps
identify the good and the bad to buy/eat. This leaflet:
http://www.fishonline.org/information/MCSPocket_Good_Fish_Guide.pdf
is helpful.

Very interesting, I pass your buildings [1] quite frequently. If I drop
in, I'll post a report here.

In Cambridge, it is very difficult to find fresh fish...

There is the bald guy at the market, who comes from Felixstowe, and
yes, Morrison in Cambourne who have decent oysters, and huge salmons,
good variety of squid, fish, and shellfish. They also sell tuna, and
raw tiger prawns for quite a good price.

Oysters can be found at Loch Fyne or Waitrose too.

I personally buy all my fish stuff (mainly oysters and prawns) from
Suffolk, in the village of Orford (east of Ipswich), there, the Butley
Oysterage is a shop / restaurant, where you will find delightful
things. Website: http://www.butleyorfordoysterage.co.uk/ last time i
ate there, I was sitting behind Ian Hislop.

If you wish to buy large quantities of oysters, you will need to order
before going there... Two weekends ago, I was shooting a wedding in
Bawdsey (south of Orford), i took an electric cool box with me, went to
Orford beforehand, bought 4 dozen oysters (ordered the day before), 1
Kg of frozen tiger prawns, some samphire, smoked salmon (smoked there),
fish and crab soup... In all about £75 worth.

The few friends i invited that evening for an impromptu seafood tasting
are still talking about it ! :)

Well - there are quite a few supermarkets that sell fresh (fsvo) fish.
